Lithium batteries can fail in different ways depending on their design. The biggest danger is something called "thermal runaway."
This is a chain reaction inside the battery cell that is almost impossible to stop once it begins.
It creates a massive amount of heat and energy. Most often, the individual cell will burn until it is completely gone.
Charging is often the trigger for these events - which makes it an even more intense threat because it is unsupervised when the risk is the highest.
