Why Aircooled VWs Catch Fire
The aircooled VW community understands this better than most because the conversation happens so often. The causes are specific, well-documented, and almost entirely predictable. Even a well-maintained bus has failure modes that maintenance alone cannot guarantee against.
Old and degraded fuel lines. This is the single most cited cause of engine bay fires in aircooled VWs. The rubber fuel lines on these vehicles were not designed for the ethanol-blend fuels that are now standard at virtually every pump in the country.
