Most food truck operators have thought carefully about kitchen fire safety. You have a UL-300 wet chemical suppression system over the cooking equipment because NFPA 96 requires it. You carry a Class K extinguisher for grease fires. You clean your hood filters on schedule. That is all correct and it should stay in place.

What most food truck operators have not thought about is the engine compartment.

Your food truck is a vehicle with an enclosed engine bay that carries the same fire risks as any commercial truck, plus some additional ones unique to a mobile kitchen. Fuel lines running alongside a hot exhaust manifold. Electrical systems that have been modified, extended, and stressed by years of vibration and heat cycling. In many cases, an onboard generator adding another enclosed heat source to an already complex mechanical picture. And none of those spaces have any automatic suppression protecting them.

This article is specifically about the engine compartment and onboard generator. It is not about the kitchen hood, which requires a different type of system entirely.


Why Food Truck Engine Bays Carry Elevated Risk

A food truck's engine bay carries the same fundamental fire risks as any commercial truck engine compartment, and a few additional ones worth understanding.

Fuel and fluid lines under sustained load. A food truck running a busy Saturday market runs its engine, generator, and all its cooking equipment for eight to ten hours at a stretch. That sustained operation puts thermal stress on fuel lines, hydraulic hoses, and fluid connections throughout the engine bay. A fuel line that weeps slightly under normal conditions may develop a more significant leak under extended high-load operation. Diesel or gasoline misting near a hot exhaust manifold is a fast-moving ignition event.

Electrical complexity from kitchen equipment. Food trucks run significantly more electrical load than a standard commercial vehicle. Shore power connections, generator wiring, inverter systems, and the high-current circuits serving cooking equipment all run through or near the chassis. Wiring that has been added, modified, or extended during a truck build may not have been routed with the same care as factory wiring. Chafed insulation, undersized wiring, and loose connections near fuel or heat sources are documented fire causes in modified vehicles.

Propane lines through the chassis. Trucks that run propane cooking equipment route propane lines from external tanks through the truck body. A propane line that runs near engine or exhaust heat, or that has been damaged by a chassis flex or a road impact, is a fire risk that is distinct from anything a commercial truck without a kitchen would face.

Onboard generators. Many food trucks run a separate onboard generator to power cooking equipment independently of the vehicle engine. A generator in its own enclosed housing is exactly the kind of enclosed heat source and fuel-burning equipment that benefits from automatic suppression. Diesel fuel, hot exhaust, and accumulated debris in a generator enclosure create conditions that parallel the risks in any enclosed engine compartment.

Unattended overnight periods. Food trucks are often left parked with systems shut down but not fully isolated. A fuel leak that develops overnight in an engine bay has hours to accumulate before the truck is next started. A generator that was hot when it was shut down and is not fully cooled before the truck goes into overnight storage is sitting with combustible residue against hot surfaces.

How BlazeCut Works in a Food Truck Engine Bay

Sizing Your System

Food truck engine compartments are engine fire applications. Sizing uses the engine fire column from the official BlazeCut T Series specification table and is based on the gross interior volume of the engine bay.

Here are the verified calculations, triple-checked against the official ratings:

Box truck platform (Ford E-450, Ram ProMaster, and similar): Typical interior approximately 36 inches long by 28 inches wide by 20 inches tall. 36 x 28 x 20 = 20,160 cubic inches divided by 1,728 = 11.67 cubic feet. The T100E is rated to 12.36 cubic feet for engine fires, which covers this with a margin of 0.69 cubic feet. Given how close this is to the rating ceiling, a TR200FK is the safer recommendation for this platform to ensure adequate coverage with comfortable margin.

Step van platform (Grumman Olson, Workhorse P30/P42, and similar): Typical interior approximately 40 inches long by 32 inches wide by 22 inches tall. 40 x 32 x 22 = 28,160 cubic inches divided by 1,728 = 16.30 cubic feet. The T200E is rated to 24.37 cubic feet for engine fires. A TR200FK covers this platform with good margin.

Onboard generator enclosure: Typical compact generator housing approximately 24 inches long by 16 inches wide by 14 inches tall. 24 x 16 x 14 = 5,376 cubic inches divided by 1,728 = 3.11 cubic feet. The T025E is rated to 3.18 cubic feet for engine fires. A TR025FK covers a typical compact generator housing, though the margin here is very tight. If your generator enclosure is any larger than these approximate dimensions, measure it carefully and size up to a TR050FK for comfortable coverage.

For any truck not listed above, measure the interior of the engine bay in inches, multiply length x width x height, divide by 1,728 to convert to cubic feet, and select the tube whose engine fire rating covers that gross volume with some margin. The Two-Zone Approach

Many food truck operators benefit from protecting both the engine compartment and the generator enclosure as separate independent zones. FAQ: Food Truck Engine Fire Suppression
