There's a specific feeling that comes with the first warm weekend of spring when you know the car has been sitting in the garage since October.
You want to drive it. That's completely understandable. But the cars that have a great first season are usually the ones where someone took a few hours to go through everything before pulling out of the driveway.
A few months of sitting does things to a car. Fluids settle and degrade. Rubber dries out. Fuel goes stale. Tires develop flat spots. Batteries drain. None of it is dramatic on its own, but the combination of everything that happens during a winter in storage means the car that went in is not quite the same as the car that's coming out.
Here's what to work through before the first drive of the season.
Fluids First
Start with everything wet.
Oil should be checked for level and condition. If the car went into storage without an oil change and it's been sitting for several months, now is a good time to do one before you put any miles on it. Old oil that's been sitting doesn't do the engine any favors on startup, which is when wear is highest.
Coolant level and condition. Check the overflow and the radiator if your car has a traditional cap. While you're there, look at the upper and lower hoses for cracks, soft spots, or swelling. A hose that's been sitting compressed in cold weather and is already showing age can fail on a warm day under pressure.
Brake fluid absorbs moisture over time. If yours hasn't been changed in a while and you're not sure of the condition, it's worth testing or replacing. Compromised brake fluid has a lower boiling point, which matters when you're driving hard.
Power steering fluid, transmission fluid, and differential oil depending on your setup. Check levels and look for any signs of leaks that may have developed or worsened over the winter.
Fuel System
If the car sat with ethanol-blended fuel and no stabilizer, the fuel has likely degraded. Ethanol attracts moisture and phase separates over time, which leaves water and varnish deposits in the tank, lines, and carburetor.
Smell the fuel. Old gas has a distinct sour smell compared to fresh fuel. If it smells off, draining and refilling is the right call before you try to start it.
Inspect the fuel lines from the tank forward. Look for cracks, soft spots, weeping at connections, and any signs of deterioration. Rubber fuel line on a car that's been sitting goes through temperature cycles that accelerate aging. A line that looked fine in October may not be fine in April.
For carbureted cars, a bowl drain and fresh fuel through the carb is good practice if the car sat more than a couple of months without running. A stuck float, a gummed needle, or a clogged jet is a lot more common after winter storage than most people plan for.
Brakes
Brakes on a stored car deserve more attention than they usually get.
Brake rotors and drums surface rust quickly when a car sits. A light layer of rust on rotors is normal and clears itself after a few stops. But calipers and wheel cylinders that have been sitting can seize, stick, or develop internal corrosion that affects their ability to release properly.
Before the first real drive, pull the car out slowly in a safe area and test the brakes deliberately. Make sure all four corners are doing their job and that nothing is dragging. A dragging brake generates heat in a hurry and can create a fire risk in its own right on a long drive.
Check the parking brake cable operation and look at the brake hoses for cracking or swelling at the flex points. These age the same way fuel lines do and a failure under braking is a bad day.
Tires and Suspension
Tires that sat in one position for several months can develop flat spots. In cold weather this happens faster. The first few miles will often work them out on a radial tire, but it's worth driving slowly at first and feeling for vibration or pull before you commit to highway speeds.
Check tire pressure cold before you move the car. Pressure drops in cold weather and a tire that was at the right pressure in October can be several pounds low by spring.
While you're at the wheels, look at the sidewalls for cracking. UV exposure and ozone cause rubber to crack over time, and tires that look fine from a distance can show significant surface cracking up close. Cracked sidewalls are a failure risk regardless of tread depth.
Suspension and steering components. Look for torn boots on ball joints and tie rod ends. Grease that's dried out or contaminated, or components that have developed looseness over the winter, show up as vague steering or clunking on rough roads. Better to find it in the driveway than on the highway.
Electrical
Batteries that sit discharge over time. If yours wasn't on a tender all winter, check the charge and load test it if you have any doubt. A battery that starts the car fine on a cool morning can fail to start it after a hot day at a show.
Go through the lights. Headlights, taillights, brake lights, turn signals. Connections that were marginal going into storage can fail over the winter. Bulbs that were on their way out sometimes don't make it through.
Check the connections at the battery terminals for corrosion and make sure they're tight. Look at the ground strap from the battery to the chassis and from the engine block to the chassis. A bad ground causes all kinds of intermittent problems that are hard to diagnose and easy to prevent.
If the car has aftermarket electrical components, now is a good time to trace the wiring and make sure nothing has worked loose, chafed against something it shouldn't, or shown any signs of heat damage from last season.
Under the Hood Fire Risk
This is the part of the spring checklist that most guides leave out.
Everything described above — fuel lines, hoses, old wiring, aftermarket electrical — are the exact things that cause engine bay fires in classic cars. They don't announce themselves and they don't care whether you're at a show or on the highway when they decide to become a problem.
Spring is a good time to look at this with fresh eyes. If your fuel lines are original rubber and you've been meaning to replace them, this is the season to do it before another year of heat cycles goes by. If the wiring has splices that have always looked a little rough, sort them out now.
And if your car doesn't already have automatic fire suppression in the engine bay, this is worth thinking about before the season starts rather than after something happens.

One More Thing Before the First Drive
Go through everything above and the car will be in better shape than most of what you'll see at the first show of the season. But the most important step is also the simplest one.
Take it easy on the first drive. Stay close to home, keep speeds reasonable, and pay attention to how the car feels and smells. The first 20 minutes tells you a lot. Anything that's going to announce itself usually does it early.
